afraid

I can taste the fear on your lips,
the quivering way you say
I love you
in your sleep,
the restless way you trace
the ridged curve of my
spine
or
the anxious way you kiss
the jagged peaks of my
shoulder blades:
I know you’re afraid,
I know you’re afraid,
I know you’re afraid.

But I am not to be feared,
my teeth are not shaped
to tear you
limb from limb,
nor are my bones
mountains
meant to keep you out;
my cells divide
to make room for you,
my lungs expand
to absorb you in:
Just know I’m afraid,
Just know I’m afraid,
Just know I’m afraid.
