you remind me

Of every reason
I don’t get involved
With men
Who appear too much
Like my father
When they drink;
Too handsy with
Women they don’t
Love:
Hungry eyes
A tongue full of
anger,
Who speak in their sleep of
Nightmares that
Haunt them while awake,
Unable to
communicate
Until the liquor
Has them loose enough
to lie.
You remind me
Of every reason
I believe no one
Can love someone
Who’s been broken,
A puzzle of blue sky
With pieces missing,
Because no man
Has been brave enough
To focus on
What’s inside
Rather than what’s
Along the border:
And even my father couldn’t stay.
You remind me
Of every reason
I build walls,
Comparable to
the mountains
That raised me,
To shut out
Every hand
That’s ever touched me,
Believing they’ll leave
Before they find a motive
To settle:
And you,
You promised you were
Different.
You remind me
Of every reason.
